Tuck worth the risk

Fiona knew there were risks involved in getting a full tummy tuck. Her surgeon, Dr. Robert Stubbs of Toronto, had explained that any operation can go wrong and can even turn fatal. But she did her research and decided that the possibility of losing the paunch she had carried since giving birth twice outweighed the hazards.

"I needed it off," Fiona, a 40-year-old woman who did not want her last name used, said yesterday. The operation was performed two years ago and she said she has never had a moment's regret. In fact, even after learning of the death of Micheline Charest during a facelift in Montreal on Wednesday, Fiona returned for an additional minor procedure yesterday. "I felt genuinely comfortable and well-informed and it was something that I could do without any trepidation," she said.

The difference that the $10,000 operation made in her life was "huge," said Fiona. "I feel so confident about myself. . . . It's ridiculous to think that removing a little flap of skin can make such a difference, but it does."
